Happiness

Preach for Better Life

– Happiness According to Adi Shankaracharya –

Adi Shankaracharya taught that true happiness (Ananda) is not found in material possessions, pleasures, or worldly achievements but in realizing one’s true nature as Brahman (Supreme Consciousness). According to Advaita Vedanta, lasting happiness comes from self-knowledge (Jnana) and detachment (Vairagya), not from external objects.

1. True Happiness is Within (Not in External Objects)

  • Most people seek happiness in money, relationships, status, or pleasures.
  • But these are temporary and constantly changing, leading to suffering and disappointment.
  • Shankaracharya taught that permanent happiness lies in realizing one’s divine nature (Atman).

📖 Example from Nirvana Shatakam:
“Na me dvesha ragau, na me lobha mohau, Na me naiva mithya, na me naiva mrityuh”
(I have no attachment, no greed, no delusion, no falsehood, no birth, no death – I am pure bliss, I am Shiva.)

🕉 Practice: Instead of chasing external pleasures, turn inward through self-inquiry and meditation.

2. Overcoming Desire & Attachment (Vairagya = Freedom = Happiness)

  • Desires create restlessness and suffering because they are never fully satisfied.
  • Attachment to people, outcomes, and material things causes fear and sorrow.
  • Shankaracharya emphasized Vairagya (detachment) as the path to inner peace and happiness.

📖 Bhaja Govindam verse:
“Moham kshudram tyaja moha jalam, buddhim kurusva buddham nishalam”
(Give up your small desires and illusions, and focus your mind on wisdom and truth.)

🕉 Practice: Observe your desires—ask yourself, “Will this bring lasting happiness?” Let go of unnecessary cravings.

3. Knowledge (Jnana) Leads to Ultimate Bliss

  • Ignorance (Avidya) makes us think we are limited, weak, and separate from the Divine.
  • But true knowledge (Jnana) reveals that we are already full, complete, and blissful.
  • Once you know your true self (Atman = Brahman), there is no fear, anxiety, or sorrow—only peace and joy.

📖 Quote from Vivekachudamani:
“Ajnana mrityum tirthva jnanena paramam padam”
(Cross the ocean of ignorance with knowledge and reach the highest state of bliss.)

🕉 Practice: Read spiritual scriptures like Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, or Shankaracharya’s works to deepen wisdom.

4. Mind Control = Inner Peace = Happiness

  • The uncontrolled mind runs after external pleasures, causing suffering.
  • A peaceful mind (Shanta Chitta) is the source of real happiness.
  • Through meditation, self-inquiry, and detachment, one can attain unshakable inner joy.

📖 Quote from Atma Bodha:
“Mana eva manushyanam karanam bandha mokshayoh”
(The mind alone is the cause of bondage and liberation.)

🕉 Practice: Meditate daily to calm the mind. Simple breathing exercises or Aham Brahmasmi (I am Brahman) meditation can help.

5. Bliss (Ananda) is Your True Nature!

  • You do not “achieve” happiness—it is already within you.
  • You are Sat-Chit-Ananda (Existence, Consciousness, Bliss)—you just need to realize it.
  • When the illusion of separateness disappears, only infinite joy and peace remain.

📖 Final Truth from Nirvana Shatakam:
“Chidananda Rupah Shivoham Shivoham”
(I am pure consciousness and bliss—I am Shiva, I am Shiva.)

🕉 Practice: Whenever you feel restless, remind yourself: “I am not this body, not this mind—I am pure bliss!”
